Concept ideas......
Projects that have developed in my mind either silly or serious which are looking for commissions if you are interested?.
'Wind in the Willow'......
A video screen shows a picture of willow branches. The audience blow onto it to reveal it animated in real time video as it blows in the real wind.
Programming developed by David Tinapple. Shown on a Sony Twin view screen.
'You turn me round'......
A video of close up rotating records fading into each other
'Call Roaming'......
Inspired by my sisters handbag, a mobile phone is used as a location recording device collecting sounds from other peoples phones all over the planet. These are then diffused through 3 weather balloons in a gallery fitted with speakers inside so they become roaming speakers. An answer machine sits in the gallery and receives live call-ins from new mobile phone recorders... see call roaming webpage
'Deep End'......
Deep End is a mixed media site specific installation for an empty indoor swimming pool. Underwater slowed down audio recordings from diving and swimming pools emerge from within a pool filled with moving sound reactive balloons and light! A mysterious and ever changing spectacle for the ear and eye.
The key characteristics of a swimming pool space are the acoustic and climactic conditions we all remember growing up with. The merging of sounds in the air and the way we hear underwater.
I propose to make hydrophone [underwater] recordings of people diving into, swimming and playing in various swimming pools. These recordings come with their own watery acoustic quality which largely filters out high end sound just leaving the low or 'Deep End' remaining. By also slowing these recordings down the low end becomes much more pronounced and the sounds become slow motion. As a diver enters the water it takes time for the sonic event to unfold in a new mysterious soundscape which I would run from 3 x random play CD players to create a continuous new random composition.
Instead of filling the pool with water I would instead fill the pool with hundreds of balloons in a few shades of watery colour. This is an effective way of giving an opaque volume to the pool yet one that moves and has it's own physically changing dynamic presence.
In the deep end of the pool I would position the speakers which would then be disguised by this sea of balloons. The sound would emerge from within the 'Deep End' and fill the who room. Sound is a great material to use to fill such a large space.
Also under the balloons would be several regular domestic fans lying on the bottom of the pool. By using a sound reactive interface [a little box of tricks I have already] I will connect the fans to the sound source so that when a large diving sound takes place then the fans will blow up the balloons and they will act like a slow motion splash mimicking the memory of what was once taking place there.
'Phone-o-graph'......
A 50's turntable is hooked up to a mobile phone floating beneath a bunch of balloons in a gallery. A record plays Call Raoming on loop and the sound goes to phone which people can use to telephone installation to friends.
'12 Tone Turntable'......
A 12 tone-arm turntable built to play a 12 locked groove record with the 12 tone scale. One output plays the resulting chord with 12 pre faders for sub mix.
In production planning.
'Static'......
An vintage or 70's record player sits in a room surrounded by party balloons. The turntable is charged with static electricity when it plays a record of static sounds. The balloons then all huddle together all over the record player covering it. It's an active process as the negative charge is reveresed to repel the ballonns as the record is reset on auto to play the process again.
'Stationary'......
A party balloon hovers in the air with a felt tip pen dangling below on a piece of cotton. Lying on the floor in a defined region like a small room is a sheet of paper. The helium filled balloon moves and falls as a fan heater blows into the room. The balloon then gradually leaves sketch marks on the paper below as is rises and falls........
'Vinyl Tap'......
A troupe of tap dancers translate a couple of songs from the movie Spinal Tap into tap dance routines. The sound recordings are pressed on glitter 7".
'Love Cats'......
A weird cat head collage blanket I have is mounted onto a big heart shaped canvas stretcher. Behind each of the many sets of eyes are a set of glowing red bulbs. The work is shown in a dark room. Coming from within the haert is the song 'Love Cats' by The Cure, and the eyes pulse in response to the song. Creepy and fun!
'Sounds Rubbish'......
A galvanised bin is tilted slightly and inside is a 10" acetate cut with sound in a ripple pattern. The blcak surface reflects perfectly. Coming from within the bin, under the record is the soundtrack of the life of the rubbish which once was there [or something like that, the visual came first]. The sound from within might be a trip on a rubbish truch, with the pistons and engines and bin scrappings etc?
'Speakers Corner'......
A bunch of speaker cones sitting in a corner making speaker sounds, um... with a site specific reason for sounds
'Picture Disc LP'......
Drawing pressed in reverse to produce raised line picture, on audiOh!Recordings.... in progress sometime
